Filler Cup

Cup filling equipment or cup fillers are designed to fill cups with liquid, paste, powder, or other product and to seal the filled cup with foil, film, plastic lid, or some other type of seal. Cup fillers can be designed with different types of filling mechanisms, such as pistons, to handle different types of products, such as pastes or liquids in the case of piston filling. Because plastic cups are easy to handle, the majority of cup fillers are designed to be fully automatic. (The tooling necessary to de-nest a cup and place the cup into the proper tooling is very simple to design and to operate.) Though cup fillers can be designed for rotary or inline operation, the basic processing steps for a cup filler are similar for both a rotary and inline machine. Cup fillers will de-nest a cup from a stack of cups by gripping the lip of the cup and removing only the bottom-most cup from the cup stack. The de-nested cup drops from the de-nesting station into the cup handling tooling. The cup handling tooling holds the cup by its rim as well. The cup filler will then index the cup until it is below the filling station. The cup filler will then fill the cup. After filling the cup, the tooling on the cup filler will index the filled cup to be sealed. Cup fillers can seal the cup using either pre-cut heat sealable lids or die cut and heat seal a lid to the cup from a roll of lid stock. Pre-cut head sealable lids are picked off a stack of lids and placed on the top of the cup. The cup is then indexed below the sealing station where the heat sealing head comes down and heat seals the lid to the rim of the cut. For a roll stock lid, the cup filler will index the filled cup below a roll of lid stock. A tooling head will come down and heat seal the lid stock to the cup and die cut the proper size lid around the cup in one operation. The roll stock of lid film is then indexed so that a new portion of lid stock is ready for the next cup. The filled and sealed cup can then be discharge from the cup filler. Some cup filler have stations that place a plastic lid over the film seal, often called an overlid, before discharging the cup for the cup filler.
